No. 39 Turn the Perfect Salad Bowl

The use of multiple high-quality cameras gives you the maker’s view and shows in detail, both the stance at the lathe also close-ups of the tools in action.

In this video, I take you through the steps of creating what I believe is the perfect salad bowl, with an equal measure of form and function. The video begins with tips on design and guides you through the marking out and processing of the log.

I also give advice on using the chainsaw and I discuss both the chains and the guide-bars that lead to straight cuts, a smooth surface on the blank, and how to prevent the saw from clogging with noodles.

Rough-shaping is shown giving guidelines on quick shaping, inside and out, in preparation for the drying process and end-sealing to prevent cracking.  Then on to remounting and re-turning a dry bowl using push cuts and shear cuts.

I describe the causes of vibration and how to eliminate this from happening. I take you through the power sanding process, applying a durable food-safe finish and offer you various options for base design.

This comprehensive video goes through the essentials, using skills gained as a production turner for almost four decades at the lathe. This video is the closest you can get to an in-person class with me.
